Most of us use computers, email, and the internet without giving it much thought (besides the occasional 'Why is this taking so darn long to load?!'). But have you ever wondered about the history behind it all? Grab your coffee and let's stretch those brain muscles!
Ah, the 'first computer' debate - a tale as old as time (well, almost). Charles Babbage dreamed up his Difference Engine way back in the 1820s, earning it the title of the first mechanical computer. Fast forward to 1945, and along came the ENIAC, strutting on to the scene as the first electronic, general purpose digital computer. Talk about a glow up!
Back in 1971, Ray Tomlinson, a programmer at Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BNN), hit 'send' on the world's very first email. The lucky recipients? Two computers having a chat via the ARPANET network - the internet's grandparent. And just like that, email was born (spam would come later)!
On August 6, 1991, Tim Berners-Lee, the genius at CERN, unveiled the internet's first masterpiece: a humble website that introduced the World Wide Web project - because when you invent the internet, you get to talk about how awesome it is!
